about...

In my practice as a Textile Designer I create essentially feminine, elegantly detailed, embroidered clothing and accessories in luxury fabrics, with a unique depth suggestive of mystery and intrigue, providing glimpses of a sinister world creeping out from within. Through my practice I investigate the contrast of the romantic surface and the sinister undertones. I also explore the underlying themes of femininity and sexuality, common to many popular fairy tales. I concentrate on embroidered detail and placement of the detail around certain body sites, to suggest sensual arousal and reaction to emotions central to the tales.

Through a variety of techniques I develop a craft to support the concept. I mix traditional hand stitch and hand painting with digital techniques of stitch and print. My work always develops from initial drawings and studies, created using a variety of media sympathetic to the subject and the mood I wish to represent. The work then passes through many processes of image manipulation, print, stitch, cutwork and hand manipulation that emphasise the craft and intimacy involved.

I specialise in stitched textiles and I gained a BA in Embroidery in 2002. Following graduation I worked as a digital stitch designer for four years before returning to education. I completed my MA in Textile design in 2006. Since then, I have been working as a freelance designer from my studio space in Kew Studio near Kew Gardens.
